Nachdem Willie Nelson erst zu Beginn des Jahres 2021 sein neues Sinatra-Cover-Album »That’s Life« veröffentlichte, kehrt die US-amerikanische Country-Legende zum Jahresende mit einem weiteren Longplayer aus dem Studio zurück.

»Willie Nelson Family« heißt das mittlerweile 72. Album Nelsons, der 2021 seinen 88. Geburtstag feierte.

Der Titel verrät, dass es sich dabei um ein Familienalbum handelt. Mit dabei sind Willies Schwester Bobbi, seine Söhne Lukas und Micah sowie seine Töchter Amy und Paula, die sich gemeinsam auf dem Cover präsentieren. Außerdem haben Nelsons ständige Bandmitglieder an der Platte mitgearbeitet: Mickey Raphael, Billy English, Kevin Smith und Paul English, Nelsons langjähriger Schlagzeuger und Vertrauter, der Anfang letzten Jahres im Alter von 87 Jahren starb.

Neben einigen Willie-Nelson-Originalen aus den letzten Jahren, die die Familie hier gemeinsam performt, warten auf »Willie Nelson Family« ein paar Coverversionen, zum Beispiel von George Harrisons »All Things Must Pass«, Kris Kristoffersons »Why Me« oder »Keep On The Sunnyside« von der Carter Family.

Bereits im September erschien die erste Singleauskopplung »Family Bible«. Der Song zählt zu den frühesten Kompositionen des Musikers. Er entstand bereits 1957, inspiriert von Szenen, in denen Willies Großmutter nach dem Abendessen »Rock Of Ages« sang und aus der Bibel las. Als junger Songwriter, der nach Houston zog, verkaufte Willie den Song an Paul Buskirk, der den Sänger Claude Gray für die Aufnahme von Nelsons Originalsongs (darunter »Family Bible« und »Night Life«) gewann. Grays Single-Version wurde im Februar 1960 veröffentlicht und erreichte Platz sieben der Billboard Hot Country Singles Charts. Der Erfolg der Single ermöglichte es Willie, nach Nashville zu ziehen, wo er sich einen Namen als Songwriter machte. Seine eigene Version nahm Nelson erstmals 1971 für sein Album »Yesterday’s Wine« auf. Das Lied ist seitdem ein fester Bestandteil seiner Live-Auftritte. Nun hat er dem Song neues Leben eingehaucht.

He continues to lobby against horse slaughter and produces his own blend of biodiesel fuel. An old-school road-dog troubadour with new school wheels, Willie plays concerts year-round, tirelessly touring on Honeysuckle Rose III (he rode his first two buses into the ground), taking his music and fans to places that are always worth the ride.

The very first musician to perform on the premiere episode of Austin City Limits in 1974, Willie Nelson was inducted into the inaugural class of the Austin City Limits Hall of Fame by fellow Texan Matthew McConaughey on Saturday, April 26, 2014. “There would be no Austin City Limits without Willie Nelson,” McConaughey told the audience assembled at the University of Texas at Austin, the original home of what is now America’s longest-running televised music program.

Willie Nelson, who turned 81 on April 29/April 30, is an American original, a sublime singer, master tunesmith and outlaw country’s most enduring archetype.
