Info for SHIFT (Bad Hombre, Vol. II)

"SHIFT - Bad Hombre Vol.II" is the sequel to Antonio Sánchez' Grammy-nominated album "Bad Hombre", released in 2017. On his debut album with Warner Music, Sánchez now boasts a Who Is Who of collaborators. These include some of his favourite singers and songwriters, whom he instigated to break down and then reshape material together. For support, he enlisted his alter-ego "Bad Hombre", who served as his credentials to record literally every instrument single-handedly. At the same time, he used his composing, producing and drumming talents to shift the songs into new territories without altering their respective essences.

The result is a wonderfully educated circle, attended by Dave Matthews & Pat Metheny, Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross, Meshell Ndegeocello, Lila Downs, Rodrigo y Gabriela, Kimbra, Ana Tijoux, Becca Stevens, Silvana Estrada, MARO, Thana Alexa & SONICA with their own well-known pieces - or with fresh ideas from Sánchez that were worked out together. In this way, creative spaces emerged that seemed familiar and new at the same time - like rediscovered places to explore together, musically.

Because of the pandemic, Sánchez's artistic collaborators had plenty of time on their hands, which greatly facilitated collaborations under distance bids. Sánchez, who had been named "Drummer of the Year" three times by the readers of Modern Drummer magazine, also found more time to work out original ideas, which led to the expansion of his self-image as a producer and perfomer. Although he believes he is not a guitarist, bassist, mandolinist or oud player, his alter-ego "Bad Hombre" played all those instruments and more.

On the first "Bad Hombre" album, Sánchez showed himself to be extraordinarily politically motivated. Over the years, his outrage and anger over Trump and the unrest on the US-Mexican border became muted. Sánchez himself shifted his priorities to breaking through creative barriers to conquer new sonic territories. "My anger transformed," he recalls. "Also, the fact that this 'new' material was not primarily mine created a pleasant balance. It helped me to look at musical information from a different angle. I wondered, as I looked at each piece, 'What else can this song be?'"

Thus, the second outing of "Bad Hombre" became an exciting, eclectic journey, bringing together about a dozen voices and perspectives from all corners of the globe. It took a lot of preparation time before it got rolling. "I like to joke with the metaphor that I was pregnant with the idea for this album for many years," Sánchez tells us. "And now I have given birth to this really epic baby".
